Organization and individual categories

01 – Lean Transformation Excellence

Description. Recognizes organizations demonstrating outstanding mastery in Lean thinking, flow-based methodologies, and continuous improvement to achieve transformative operational outcomes.

What qualifies. Value Stream Mapping and end-to-end flow optimization, Kaizen events and programs delivering measurable waste reduction, Pull systems, Kanban, and Just-In-Time implementations, 5S, visual management, and standard work programs, Hoshin Kanri and strategy deployment, cultural transformation embedding continuous improvement.

Who can apply. Organizations of any size, sector, or geography. Business units, departments, or project teams. Joint submissions with consulting partners accepted – primary applicant must be the implementing organization.

Not suitable for. Entries primarily centered on Six Sigma statistical methods, TPM, or digital automation – those belong in their respective categories.

02 – Six Sigma Excellence

Description. Recognizes organizations achieving outstanding results through Six Sigma methodologies, statistical process control, and data-driven quality improvement.

What qualifies. DMAIC or DFSS projects with rigorous statistical analysis, Statistical Process Control implementations, Design of Experiments and hypothesis-driven improvement, data-driven quality management systems, Black Belt and Green Belt project portfolios with measurable impact.

Who can apply. Organizations of any size, sector, or geography. Business units, departments, or project teams. Joint submissions with consulting partners accepted.

Not suitable for. Entries primarily focused on Lean flow methods, TPM maintenance practices, or digital automation tools.

Description. Recognizes organizations achieving outstanding results through Total Productive Maintenance, reliability engineering, and asset performance management.

What qualifies. Implementation of TPM pillars – Autonomous Maintenance, Planned Maintenance, and others. OEE improvement programs with quantified results. Reliability-centered maintenance and asset lifecycle management. Zero-breakdown and zero-defect initiatives. JIPM certification programs or award-level TPM deployments.

Who can apply. Organizations of any size, sector, or geography. Manufacturing, process, and asset-intensive organizations are particularly suited.

Not suitable for. Entries primarily focused on Lean flow optimization, Six Sigma statistics, or pure digital transformation.

Description. Recognizes outstanding operational improvements through the strategic integration of digital technologies – including IoT, AI, RPA, and analytics – with operational excellence methodologies.

What qualifies. IoT, digital twins, and smart factory implementations. Data analytics and business intelligence for operational improvement. RPA, AI, and intelligent automation within an Opex framework. Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing initiatives. Digital workflow and collaboration tools driving measurable Opex outcomes.

Who can apply. Organizations of any size, sector, or geography where digital technologies were strategically deployed to enhance Opex outcomes.

Not suitable for. Pure IT or software implementations without a clear connection to Opex methodology. Entries focused solely on technology adoption without operational impact evidence.

Description. Recognizes shared services, GBS, and BPO organizations achieving outstanding operational improvements through the application of Opex methodologies.

What qualifies. Service delivery optimization and SLA improvement. Transition and transformation excellence. Cost-per-transaction reduction with verified financial impact. Multi-function shared services integration. Knowledge management and capability building at scale.

Who can apply. Shared services centers, GBS organizations, BPO providers, and captive centers of any size or geography.

Not suitable for. Organizations not operating in a shared service, GBS, or BPO model. Use the methodology-specific categories instead.

Description. Recognizes outstanding supply chain and logistics improvements through the application of operational excellence methodologies.

What qualifies. End-to-end supply chain optimization with measurable results. Warehouse and distribution center excellence. Procurement and supplier management improvement. Demand forecasting and inventory optimization. Logistics network redesign and resilience building.

Who can apply. Organizations of any size from any industry – manufacturers, distributors, third-party logistics providers, and retailers with significant supply chain operations.

Not suitable for. Entries where supply chain improvement was incidental. Entries focused primarily on manufacturing operations should apply under the appropriate methodology category.

Description. Recognizes small and medium enterprises achieving outstanding operational improvements through Opex methodologies adapted to the realities of smaller organizations.

What qualifies. Lean, Six Sigma, or TPM adapted for SME scale and resources. Disproportionate impact relative to organizational size. Resourceful and creative application of Opex principles. Cultural transformation in smaller teams. Growth enablement through operational discipline.

Who can apply. Organizations with fewer than 500 employees or under USD 50 million annual revenue from any sector or geography.

Not suitable for. Large enterprises or subsidiaries of large groups. Organizations exceeding the size thresholds should apply under the appropriate methodology or sector category.

08 – Opex Practitioner of the Year

Description. Recognizes an individual operational excellence practitioner demonstrating exceptional skill, dedication, and impact in applying Opex methodologies to deliver measurable results.

What qualifies. Hands-on expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, TPM, or other Opex disciplines. 2-3 key projects or initiatives personally led with quantified results. Demonstrated methodology rigor and problem-solving capability. Evidence of personal contribution beyond team or organizational effort. Organizational endorsement letter confirming individual contributions.

Who can apply. Black Belts, Green Belts, TPM coordinators, CI specialists, and process engineers from any organization, sector, or geography.

Not suitable for. Senior leaders or executives at VP or Director level and above. Self-nominations without organizational endorsement.

09 – Young Opex Leader Under 35

Description. Recognizes a rising talent in operational excellence who, despite being early in their career, has already demonstrated exceptional capability, impact, and potential for future leadership.

What qualifies. 2-3 key achievements with quantified results relative to career stage. Evidence of leadership beyond their formal role. Ambition and potential signaling the next generation of Opex leadership. Organizational endorsement letter confirming contributions. Proof of age – must be under 35 at the time of submission.

Who can apply. Professionals under 35 years of age from any organization, sector, or geography.

Not suitable for. Professionals aged 35 or above at the time of submission. Self-nominations without organizational endorsement.

Bestowed awards

The following awards are bestowed by the Founding Advisory Council. They cannot be applied for.

Lifetime Achievement in Operational Excellence

The highest individual honor bestowed by the World Opex Awards. Recognizes career-spanning contributions that have fundamentally shaped the discipline, inspired generations of practitioners, and left an enduring legacy of methodology advancement and organizational transformation.

Selection. Nominees are identified and selected by the Advisory Council. This award cannot be applied for.

World Opex Pioneer Award

Recognizes an individual or organization that has broken new ground in operational excellence by introducing novel methodologies, frameworks, technologies, or approaches that have significantly advanced how organizations pursue operational improvement.

Selection. Nominees are identified and selected by the Advisory Council. This award cannot be applied for.

Founding Year Hall of Fame

A one-time inaugural recognition created exclusively for the founding year of the World Opex Awards. Honors organizations and individuals who have demonstrated sustained, exceptional commitment to operational excellence over many years. Exclusive to 2026 and will not be repeated.

Selection. Nominees are identified and selected by the Advisory Council. This award cannot be applied for.

Every entry is scored across five dimensions by independent evaluators. Each criterion is scored 0-10, with different weightings reflecting their relative importance.
